::  Overview

What is a School Health Advisory Council (SHAC)?

A SHAC is a group of individuals representing segments of the community, appointed by the school district to serve at the district level, to provide advice to the district on coordinated school health programming and its impact on student health and learning.

SHACs provide an efficient, effective structure for creating and implementing age-appropriate, sequential health education programs, and early intervention and prevention strategies that can easily be supported by local families and community stakeholders.

In order to promote health and wellness and to fight the growing problem of obesity among children, Fort Stockton ISD has formed a committee of six individuals to act as the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC). This committee represents various segments of our community and will make recommendations to the school board concerning the health and fitness of our students. Serving on the committee are:

  • Christina Duarte (Co-Chair/Parent Representative)
  • Paula Traynham (Co-Chair/District Representative)
  • Marissa Renteria (Parent Representative)
  • Aimee Vislar (Parent Representative)
  • Geneva Ripley (Parent Representative)
  • Michelle Huckaby (Parent Representative)
An additional resource for our district is Cathy Harris, RN who is a Regional School Health Specialist with Region 18 Education Service Center in Midland, Texas.
::  Recommendations

Recommendations that have already been received from the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) are that all children in Kindergarten through 8th Grade be involved in 135 minutes of physical education per week and that all schools participate in the TEA approved Coordinated Approach To Child Health (CATCH) program. For more information on CATCH, see the links below.

FSISD is an active participant in the Fitnessgram physical health assessment tool in Grades 3 through 12. Data on student fitness has been gathered by TEA and provided to our district to assist campus improvement teams in evaluating the coordinated school health program.

::  Coordinated School Health (CSH)

Coordinated School Health (CSH) is a process which brings a school community together to teach children to be healthy for a lifetime. Effective coordinated school programs reinforce positive healthy behaviors throughout the day and make it clear that good health and learning go hand in hand.

CATCH (Coordinated Approach To Child Health) is a TEA approved Coordinated School Health Program designed to promote physical activity, healthy food choices, and prevent tobacco use in elementary and middle school aged children. By teaching children that eating healthy and being physically active every day can be FUN, the CATCH Program has proved that establishing healthy habits in childhood can promote behavior change that carry into adulthood.

The CATCH Program focuses on coordinating four components: the Eat Smart school nutrition program, classroom curriculum,a physical education program, and a family program. The coordination of health messages between these four component areas is critical to positively impact children's knowledge and behavior. For over 10 years CATCH has guided schools, families, and children in the process of being healthy. CATCH, the largest school-based health promotion study in the U.S., has demonstrated that behaviors such as eating foods high in saturated fat and physical inactivity can be changed.

“CATCH was the largest elementary school health study conducted in the United States. It has repeatedly demonstrated that healthy eating and physical activity can be positively changed. Our goal is to implement this effective program in every elementary school in the United States, and turn the rising tide of child obesity.”
Dr. Steven Kelder, The University of Texas School of Public Health
