So You Think You Can Act?

[8.1.2008]

The Pinon Summer Camp “So You Think You’re an Actor?” concluded on Friday evening, August 1st, with productions of “Annie Jr.” and ‘Music Man Jr.”. The mini-musicals featured songs selected from each of the original Broadway Musicals as performed on Broadway in New York City.

At  the end of the last musical, there was a reception for the parents, community and the small mighty actors who performed.

The students had the total responsibility of planning and keeping up the sets for each scene for both musicals. “Music Man Jr.” is set in July of 1912 and “Annie Jr.” is set in December of the 1930s so the sets have presented quite a challenge for the students to overcome. All of the students were in both productions, whether it be on stage or behind the set as stage crew. The students have worked very hard and had a great time while learning. They have learned stage directions, many speaking parts, songs, choreography, and technical aspects of putting on a production (lighting, microphones, sets and props). The students also took a field trip to the Globe Theater in Odessa, Texas, for a tour and a workshop at the theater.

The stars of the four week summer camp are students from Fort Stockton I.S.D., visitors from Canada and the state of Colorado and also homeschooled students who reside in Fort Stockton.  The students’ ages range from 4 to 14 years old. The stars were Carly, Jessenia, Crystal, Tristian, Nathan, Aaron, Sanissa, Sarah, Heather, Sydnee, Hannah, Clayton, Ysabel, Rachael, Javier, Cristian, Sebastain, Allison, Kayli, Jasmine, Desiree, Arika, Nydeline, Jovani, Clarissa, Bree, Kimberly, Alyssa, Kamron and KayDance. Teachers for the summer camp were Collette Barragan and Liz Baker. The summer camp was made possible through a generous grant sponsored by the Piñon Foundation.
