Mrs. Hayter's 8th Grade students recently used the
concepts learned from their force and motion unit along with lots of problem
solving to create a company to design and build a roller coaster from foam pipe
insulation and cups that included at least two hills, one loop, and one curve
(with all areas labeled with their physics vocabulary) through which the "car",
a marble, came to a safe landing. They made blue prints then proceeded to build
the coaster. When a part did not work, they had to "fix" it and change the blueprint. They created themes and named their roller coaster besides producing an
advertisement for their ride. An outstanding job was done by these 8th graders, and the entire school enjoyed watching the wild rides.
Teachers and former students judged the roller coasters, with the
winners as follows: Most Outstanding: 1. Metallic Belt by Adrian, Eddic,
Adriannah, and Catherine; 2. Twister by Nathaniel, Brandon, Justin and Ryan;
3. Sikopathyk by Ashley, Adralai,
