Summer School Begins June 7th
Summer school will be held at Fort Stockton High School from June 7 through July 2, 2010. This is 20 days in all. Classes will meet Monday through Friday from 8:10 AM to 1:10 PM in the GCS Lab, Panther Den and Lab 1.
This is your opportunity to earn back any lost credits in Algebra, History, English, Social Studies or Health. Join us for the credit recovery program (A+) and regain credits lost because of attendance and/or semester grades.
Registration for summer school will be held in the Counselor's Office on June 1st through June 4th. Call 432-336-4153 for more information. Late registration will also be available on the first class day in the hallway in front of GCS from 8:30 to 9:30 AM.
A $10 fee will be assessed for every semester course attempted in summer school. Fee waivers are available based on financial need upon request of the principal.
Standard Attire Begins in Fall 2010
Students attending classes at Fort Stockton High School next fall will look considerably different than they have in previous years. All campuses within the district have adopted a new dress code called "Dress for Success".
The style of clothing that will be acceptable is much more professional than in the past. A limited number of colors can be worn: white, royal blue, navy blue and khaki for shirts; black, navy blue and khaki for pants or skirts; solid brown or solid black for belts (no bling!). All clothes must fit well - no more than one size larger than you are right now.
Shirts must be solid colors or stripes. They must be in a polo or oxford style and must have a collar. Logos must be smaller than a quarter with the exception of school logos and lettering.
Are you thinking "I'll freeze in Mrs. Granado's room."? Not to worry - you may wear an undershirt under your collared shirt as long as it is one of the acceptable colors and doesn't have any writing or logos on it. Your undershirt can be a t-shirt, turtleneck or thermal. It's OK for the sleeves to extend past the outer shirt sleeves. AND you can wear a sweatshirt, sweater or cardigan in class. None of these can have a hood and the sweatshirts cannot have pockets. You will have to stash your coat in your locker, however.
What else? Well, you have to wear shoes. You have to tuck your shirt in and wear a belt if your pants or skirt has belt loops. You cannot wear jeans of any color. You can still wear jewelry and ribbons in your hair. Visit the FSISD home page for a slideshow and other documents that give more information.
The rules will be relaxed a bit on Spirit Days - those are the days we get to go to pep rallies in Panther Gym - plus other days that Mr. A will choose. You can wear Panther shirts or college shirts on those days but no jerseys.
Local stores that will be selling the standard attire will be Wal-Mart, Beall's and Pecos County Feed and Supply.
It will be interesting to see the creative ways that our students choose to express their individuality and still stay within the rules. Look on this page in the fall for students that look awesome while dressing for success!

Rocket Missing After Successful Launch
FSHS students who are enrolled in the rockets class at the WRTTC went to Fredericksburg on Saturday, April 24th. Everyone attending the competition had a great time in spite of a twister in the area on Friday night. The IGNITE crew and Fredericksburg volunteers worked very hard to get the launch site cleaned up in time for lift off.
Fort Stockton entered two rockets into the competition and both flew successfully. One of them has not yet been found. Mr. Hatcher and Mr. Kent are the instructors.

Get Real Program
FSHS Freshmen and Sophomores attended the 'Get Real' program on Monday through Thursday, March 8-11. The two classes were divided in half with one group attending class and the other group attending the program so that each student is able to attend the program for an entire day.
Objectives of the program are:
- To build awareness of the student's role in creating and maintaining a positive school climate.
- To motivate and empower students to become leaders and help create positive changes in the school community.
- To provide opportunities for students to get to know others so that there is a greater appreciation of the diversity and a stronger sense of community among the student body.
The program is presented by Prevention Education Associates, an organization based in Austin that specializes in helping schools move toward an Exemplary state rating. Funding for the program was provided by Chevron.
Students participated in a number of activities throughout the day including a ropes course. More pictures will be uploaded shortly.
Students Are Rewarded for Perfect Attendance
Students with perfect attendance for the fall semester were recently recognized for their achievement. In order to qualify, students had to have 100% attendance for the entire semester although some tardies were allowed.
Incentive prizes provided by the Piñon Foundation were given to the students.
Those with perfect attendance are (in no particular order) Anthony, Jason, Kyle, Viviana, Margil, Faustino, Mathew, Robert, Morgan, Crystal, Efren, Ethan, Anthony, Rachael, Lorenzo, Rode, Sayra, Edwin, Sergio, and Leopoldo. Most of these are included in the pictures shown here although some are not. Perhaps they were absent?

Basketball Teams Have Parents Night

The Prowlers recognized their families at Parents Night on Friday, January 29th right before their game against the Clint Lady Lions. Pictures taken during the festivities are available on our Basketball Photo Gallery.
The Panthers held their Parents' Night at their last home district game on Tuesday, February 16th, against Fabens. These pictures are also available on our Basketball Photo Gallery.
Operation Detour Presentation at FSHS
All FSHS students attended special programs on Wednesday, January 27th in the High School Auditorium. "Operation Detour" was presented by the US Border Patrol, Texas State Police, the US Game and Fish Department and other local agencies. Several law enforcement personnel spoke on the dangers of drugs and gangs. Three videos were shown revealing several aspects of what happens to young people when they become entangled in a drug lifestyle.
One of the videos portrayed a young man from West Texas who thought smuggling drugs would be an easy way to make money for college. It wasn't. He spoke candidly about his experiences and the consequences he is still facing. Another video was filmed in Sierra Blanco with high school students as actors. Kyle mentioned later that he recognized several places and faces in the video.
Before the program ended, students were allowed to ask questions of the officers. FSISD would like to thank these busy men and women for taking time to visit our high school campus and offer their insights to our students.

Commandos USA Perform on October 8th
Billy Lowery, from Commandos USA, came to Fort Stockton High School on Thursday, October 8th to perform his feats of strength and to inspire the students with his message of pursuing excellence. All FSHS students gathered in the Special Events Center with many of them sitting directly on the floor in front of Mr. Lowery. 8th Graders from Fort Stockton Middle School also joined in. Mr. Lowery split a large phone book and folded a frying pan to grab everyone's attention, led everyone in the 'Star Spangled Banner' and a silent prayer, then gave an encouraging talk on how to dream big dreams and set goals to achieve those dreams. He then did a few more feats of strength including the one pictured above before closing the program.

Guidance Office News (AKA Counselor's Office)
The FSHS Guidance Office is a terrific resource for all students and especially Seniors to learn about colleges and technical school. The staff consists of Omar Sanchez - Freshman and Sophomore Counselor, Daya Martinez - Secretary and Cathy Havins - Junior and Senior Counselor. Ms. Havins recently met with all Seniors to distribute information about applying for college, financial aid and housing. This information and more is also available on the Counselor's Office website (see link in left sidebar).
The students pictured below with Ms. Martinez all work in at least one class period in the Guidance Office answering the phone, opening mail and performing other assigned tasks. They recently helped Ms. Havins and Mr. Sanchez at the College and Career Day held on Thursday, October 1st on the concourse of the Special Events Center. Representatives from 37 colleges and vo-tech programs had tables set up where they distributed materials to over 600 students from FSHS and other area schools.

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce provided lunch for the representatives and Guidance Office staff. FSISD is grateful to everyone who helped to make College and Career Day successful especially Ms. Martinez who did a wonderful job pulling everything together.
