Filing for Candidacy
2027 School Board Trustee Election Candidate Requirements
To run for a place on the School Board, a candidate must meet the following requirements under Texas law.
Basic Eligibility
A candidate must:
- be a United States citizen
- be 18 years of age or older
- not have been declared mentally incapacitated by a court
- not have been finally convicted of a felony
- have lived in Texas for at least 12 months and in the district for at least 6 months before the filing deadline
- be a registered voter in the district
(Texas Election Code § 141.001; Texas Education Code §§ 11.061, 11.066; Texas Election Code § 11.002)
Application Requirements
To have a name placed on the ballot, a candidate must submit an application that:
- is in writing
- is signed and sworn to before a notary
- is filed by the deadline with the district’s filing authority
- includes:
- full name, date of birth, and occupation
- residence address and mailing address (if different)
- length of time living in Texas and in the district
- the office being sought (including place number, if applicable)
- whether the term is full or unexpired
- statements confirming:
- U.S. citizenship
- no felony conviction
- not mentally incapacitated
- awareness of nepotism laws
- oath to support the U.S. and Texas Constitutions
(Texas Election Code § 141.031)
Additional Requirement
A person is not eligible to serve on a school board if convicted of certain offenses, including felony offenses.

2027 Filing Dates
- First Day to File for a Place on the Ballot: Wednesday, January 13, 2027
- Last Day to File for a Place on the Ballot: Friday, February 12, 2027, at 5:00 p.m.
- Election Day: Saturday, May 1, 2027
