    Class Information for Español I

    Teacher:  Belinda Soto

    Course Description:

At Fort Stockton Middle School Spanish I is a yearlong academic subject that is a High School credit.  This means your grade will be calculated into your GPA for High School. The student will do a variety of activities and performances of understanding in class and at home.  We work on listening skills, speaking skills, reading comprehension, writing skills, pronunciation, and will augment cultural knowledge of Spanish-speaking countries.  As the world becomes increasingly interdependent, it is important for you to acquire the skills necessary to communicate effectively in more than one language.  This class is designed to help you continue to develop the skills necessary to achieve that.

In order to better facilitate the learning process in LOTE (Languages other than English) classroom, please observe the following:

    Expectations

    Classroom Procedures

    1.  Students must bring a composition book and folder daily.  Each student must create and maintain a folder.
    2. At the beginning of the class period immediately begin on the warm up posted on the board.  When the tardy bell rings you need to be in your seat quietly working.
    3. Be sure to have your name on all assignments.  I can’t give credit to an anonymous student.  Assignments should be turned in on time.  Place your assignments in the assignment tray.  Students will be given a 3-day grace period for turning in make up work and late assignments.  Please understand that you will be penalized points for turning in late work.  DO NOT expect to be allowed to turn in assignments after the grace period has passed.  ONLY in extreme cases will students be allowed to apply for an extension.
    4. Hold on to your graded/returned assignments and place them in your folder in the appropriate order.  This will help keep you organized and will help you create a study guide for your final at the end of the semester.
    5. Electronics (cell phones, headphones, MP3 players, I-Pods, Apple watches, ect.) will NOT be allowed to be used during class time.  There is a ZERO tolerance for use of any electronics.  The electronic item will be confiscated and returned when your fine is paid to the front office by a parent/guardian.
    6. Since speaking skills are assessed daily, mouths need to be free.  No food or gum allowed in class.
    7. Make sure you leave your work area and the file areas neat and clean.  This is your classroom and your work space.  I expect you to put all materials (including your composition book and folder) back where they belong and leave the room as neat and clean or BETTER than you found it.  Remember that this is our living space.
    8. Be on Time!  Any student who is not in their seat when the tardy bell rings will not be admitted into class without a tardy pass from the appropriate authorities.  Students must also sign the Tardy log.  No exceptions.

    Homework:

    Measurement of Student Learning:

While the novice years of language study emphasizes listening and speaking, your progress is measured in the following skill areas: oral, writing, reading, and cultural knowledge.  Students are assessed on a variety of performances of understanding such as class participation, whole class activities, paired work, group work, individual presentations, quizzes, exams and assigned Spanish practice.  During several grading periods, you will be required to complete projects which demonstrate progress and mastery.  There is a comprehensive final exam at the end of each semester, which includes assessments of all skill areas.
